Senior center offerings include free health checks, parties and more

The Shelton Senior Center offers classes, workshops and support to area seniors. The center is located at 81 Wheeler Street. Information: 203-924-9324. Some classes are for members only; others are for members and non-members alike. Wi-Fi is now available to members from 9 to 4:30 p.m.

 

Membership meeting — Friday, Jan. 10, at 10:30 a.m. All members welcome. Refreshments available.

 

Book club — Friday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. Books are: January, And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini; February, The Light Between Oceans by Mili Stedman; March, The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton; April, Emma by Jane Austin. Members only.

 

“All About Elder Law”  — Attorney Drazen will speak in the first of the series this year set for Tuesday, Jan. 21, 10:30 a.m. Non-members welcome.

 

Foot care — Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m. meet Dr. David G. Sharnoff, a podiatrist, who will speak and give an overview of the importance of proper foot care. Non-members welcome.

 

January birthday party — Friday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. Cost: $4. Music by Vinnie Carr. Tickets on sale Friday, Jan. 3, through Jan. 22 at noon. Let staff know if it’s your birthday or anniversary.

 

Blood pressure screening — The Emergency Care Institute of Bridgeport Hospital conducts Monday, Jan. 27, 12 to 2 p.m. Non-members welcome.

 

Hearing maintenance — Precision Hearing Specialists provides free hearing maintenance the fourth Tuesday of each month from 10:30-noon. This month’s screening is Jan. 28. Appointments necessary; call to schedule at 203-381-9555. Non-members welcome.

 

Valentine’s Day party — Luncheon, Friday, Feb. 7, noon.  Cost: $15. Menu includes: Chicken parmegian, London broil, red skinned mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots, Caesar salad, roll, dessert and coffee or tea. Tickets on sale Jan. 10 through Wednesday, Feb. 5, at noon.

 

February birthday party —  Held Friday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. Cost: $4. Tickets on sale Friday, Jan. 24, through Wednesday, Feb. 26, at noon.

 

Ceramic classes — Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. Stop in to view a class, and talk to the instructor.

 

Volunteers needed — The center is looking for volunteers to help in the Snack Bar  (Wednesdays 9-11 a.m.) and the kitchen (Tuesdays and Fridays, 11:15-1 p.m.).

 

Games — Wii Bowling, Thursdays at 2 p.m.; Bingo, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1 p.m.

 

Pool lessons — Available for members;.call 203-924-9324 for an appointment.
