SVHS is a member of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic and largest nonprofit healthcare system.

In addition to the hospital in Bridgeport, SVHS consists of St. Vincent’s College, St. Vincent’s Special Needs Services and St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation.

Marcus, a medical doctor, most recently served as president of St. Vincent’s Medical Center and executive vice president of St. Vincent’s Health Services.

A specialist in gastrointestinal cancer surgery, Marcus led the development of the Elizabeth M. Pfriem Swim Center for Cancer Care at St. Vincent’s, which opened in 2010.

Lead transformation of healthcare

“I am humbled by the tremendous responsibility of leading St. Vincent’s, and continuing the mission of our founders, the Daughters of Charity, in providing high quality, compassionate care to all with special attention to the poor and underserved,” Marcus said.

“St. Vincent’s has received widespread recognition as a national leader in patient safety and is now poised to lead the transformation of healthcare in our region,” he said.

Dr. Daniel Gottschall, St. Vincent’s board chairman, said Marcus “is well equipped as a leader to handle the challenge of running a complex health system with many components such as St. Vincent’s, and will bring his own unique style of creativity, inspiration and appreciation of the mission to the task.”

Succeeds Susan Davis in role

Marcus succeeds Susan L. Davis, who is transitioning full time to her role in Pensacola, Fla., as president and CEO of Sacred Heart Health System, also a member of Ascension Health. Davis will remain a member of the SVHS board of directors.

“I know that St. Vincent’s will be in the best possible hands with someone as well qualified and passionate about the delivery of safe and compassionate health care as Dr. Stuart Marcus,” Davis said.

“With his many years of clinical experience as a cancer surgeon and as the guiding force behind the creation of our cancer center and oncology program, he has always demonstrated exceptional leadership and integrity,” she said.

Has been at St. V’s since 2006

Marcus joined St. Vincent’s in 2006 and was named president of St. Vincent’s Medical Center in 2012. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president, chief medical officer and chairman of oncology at St. Vincent’s.

Prior to coming to St. Vincent’s, he held clinical and administrative positions at NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City. He received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine.

With his new appointment at SVHS, Marcus also has been named a ministry market leader by Ascension Health for its Connecticut and New York regions, which include three additional hospitals — Lourdes Memorial Hospital in Binghamton, N.Y.; Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, N.Y., and St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, N.Y.
