Emergency personnel at the scene said one person was taken to the hospital for treatment. No information was available on the extent of the individual’s injuries. (UPDATE: The person taken to the hospital later died from his injuries.)
As of about 6 p.m., the fire was out but various personnel remained at the scene.
It appeared a few ground-floor windows had been broken, possibly to gain entry by firefighters. Heavy smoke had been reported at the scene earlier.
The structure is a three-story residential home on Howe Avenue, near Wooster Street North. It is on the side of the road of the railroad tracks and Housatonic River.
A section of Howe Avenue, between White Street and Wooster Street North, was closed for firefighting operations. Vehicles were being detoured around the scene.
The fire scene is about a quarter mile north of the massive downtown fire on Jan. 6 in downtown Shelton.
