Shelton is blanketed with fresh snow on Wednesday morning

The winter wonderland outside is now getting more wintry and, depending on how you feel about snow, more wonderful as well.

Heavy snow is blanketing Shelton and southwestern Connecticut on early Wednesday morning.

Temperatures will rise from the upper 20s into the low 30s during the course of the day.

As of 7:30 a.m., it is 27 degrees in Shelton but some freezing rain already is starting to mix in with the snow.

The precipitation could eventually change to all rain as the day goes on.

Winter storm warning

A winter storm warning is in effect for the region, with 4 to 10 inches of snow expected in Fairfield County before the precipitation turns to sleet and freezing rain, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Schools and public libraries are closed today in Shelton.

More snow away from the coast

Areas farthest away from the coast should get the most snow, with the temperatures remaining colder there and the change-over taking longer to occur.

Higher amounts of snow are possible in some locations. In northwestern Connecticut, up to a foot of snow is being predicted — with accumulations of 1 to 2 inches an hour possible at times, the NWS said.

Change-over in late morning, early afternoon

The snow should turn to sleet and freezing rain sometime in the late morning or early afternoon in Fairfield County, depending on distance from the shoreline, according to the NWS.

Forecasters expect one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch of ice at the end of the storm, which could bring issues with tree limbs and power lines.

“Travel will be extremely dangerous due to significant snow and ice accumulations,” the NWS said. “The combination of snow and ice accumulations will knock down tree limbs and power lines.”

The winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
