Chromium Process building interior being cleaned out

City public works crews have been cleaning out the inside of the Chromium Process building downtown, between Canal and West Canal streets, during the course of the winter.

“They left files and reams and reams of paper,” Mayor Mark Lauretti said.

Paper and metal from inside the building is being recycled, while some other items may require proper disposal through environmental waste firms.

Structure likely to be knocked down

The city now owns the property and is likely to demolish most of the large brick complex once environmental issues with the structure and soil are addressed.

Lauretti said the demolition might take place later this year.

The property could be used in the future to add municipal parking or for a private commercial building, or for a combination of these two uses.
