It appears Unilever plans to move 400 employees to 3 Corporate Drive in Shelton, an office building in the Scinto corporate park.
The company’s intentions came up as part of application at this week’s Shelton Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) meeting.
Unilever is multinational consumer goods company that has a large research-and-development and support services operation in Trumbull.
P&Z official: ‘This is big’
The company would fill space in the Shelton office building previously occupied by General Electric and the Fletcher Thompson engineering/architectural firm, according to Shelton P&Z Administrator Richard Schultz.
“This is big,” Schultz told P&Z members at the meeting, in a reference to the number of jobs involved and the size of the space to be occupied.
The company would fill about 56,000 square feet of space in the Scinto building.
Because 3 Corporate Drive is part of a Planned Development District zone, any change in occupancy must be approved by the P&Z. The zoning board approved the application made on behalf of the building’s owner, R.D. Scinto Inc.
R&D facility has 400 employees
According to the Unilever website, the company’s R&D center in Trumbull has about 400 employees who work on skin, hair and deodorant products.
The Trumbull facility has an additional 600 employees who focus on supply chain, supplier management, information technology, human resources, finance and accounting functions in North America, according to the website.
Unilever is a European-based company that produces many well-known consumer products, with 400 brands such as Lipton, Knorr, Ben & Jerry’s, Ragu, Dove, Vaseline and Q-Tips.
Unilever’s current Trumbull facility is on Merritt Boulevard, off Route 8 and near the Shelton and Stratford borders.
