Commentary: People can now register to vote online in CT

On Feb. 18, Connecticut became the 15th state in the United States to enable eligible voters to register online. The launch of Connecticut’s online voter registration system is a vital step forward into the digital age.

By making the registration process easier for everyone, it offers a way to increase voter access and participation by under-represented groups — minorities, our men and women deployed abroad with the military, senior citizens, and, of course, young first-time voters.

If you’re an American citizen, will be 18 or older by Election Day, and hold a valid Connecticut driver’s license, learner’s permit or other ID issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, you can register online.

You can also use the online system to update your voter registration information. You can access the online system from your home computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone. It’s convenient and quick.

The link to the new voter registration feature can be reached from a link right on the state of Connecticut’s home page at www.ct.gov. Voters may also visit the League of Women Voters of Connecticut’s website at www.lwvct.org/for-voters.html.

A great step forward

Since 1920, the work of the League of Women Voters (LWV) has evolved from winning the right to vote for women to ensuring that all eligible voters can register to vote easily and participate in their democracy.

We applaud this new initiative — it’s a great step forward for all citizens in Connecticut.
