Summertime tennis lessons offered for Shelton youth

Tennis lessons will be offered in Shelton this summer for youth through adults from the Parks and Recreation Department.

For the youngsters, there are several levels available. Tennis is a sport that gets kids moving, improves balance, agility and hand-eye coordination, said a release from the department. It can also teach self-confidence and self-assurance.

The following sessions run Monday to Thursday, July 7-17.

The 10-and-Under program

The 10-and-Under program focuses on getting children to play with balls that bounce lower and move slower through the air, making them easier to hit.

Racquets are sized for small hands, making them easier to grip and swing. Courts are smaller, so kids can cover them and have more success when they play. Racquet and all equipment provided; cost is $80 per session.

Sessions are: Times for Munchkin Tennis (students entering kindergarten and first grade), 9:15-10 a.m.; and Times for Youth Tennis (students entering grades 2-5),10–11 a.m.

Junior Tennis

Junior Tennis is for those entering grades 6-12, runs 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., and is an introduction to the proper grips, techniques and form of the basic strokes in a fun, yet competitive environment.

Instruction, games and activities to focus on all the fundamentals to get your teen hitting tennis balls for the first time. Junior participant responsible for bringing a racquet.
