Manzo signs with SHU, Wilm selects Wagner

Matt Manzo and Jessica Wilm, surrounded by their families and coaches, signed National Letters of Intent to play college soccer at Sacred Heart University and Wagner, respectively.

Shelton High seniors Jessica Wilm and Matt Manzo signed National Letters of Intent to play college soccer recently. Wilm, a goalkeeper, will play at Wagner College in Staten Island, while Manzo, a midfielder, will play at Sacred Heart University.

A three-year letterwinner, Wilm notched over 130 saves last fall for the Gaelettes to earn the Player of the Season Award. In 2011, she was a member of the Shelton High side that won the Southern Connecticut Conference Housatonic Division championship. From 2010-14, she played for the NE Comets/CFC Premier Soccer Club.

Wilm, ranked 10th in her class of 350 students with a 4.0 grade-point average, was also the recipient of the Connecticut Association of Schools Scholar Athlete award this year and the New Haven Tap-Off Club Scholar Athlete Award. A captain of the soccer, lacrosse and basketball teams, she made the SCC All-Academic team in each sport.

Wilm is also a member of the National Honor Society, on the high honor roll from 2010-14, in the World Language National Honor Society, a CAPT Scholar, recipient of the Michaels Jeweler’s Citizenship Award, and a staff reporter/sports editor for the Shelton High Gael Winds newspaper.

A U.S. Soccer Federation referee, Wilm served as a volunteer at the Little Kicker summer camp from 2011-14 and the Shelton High School summer basketball camp from 2011-14.

Matt Manzo

A four-year varsity player for the Gaels, Manzo was an All-State selection his senior year, as well as a New Haven Register All-Area player. An SCC all-conference selection as a senior, Manzo made All-Housatonic Division in his junior and senior seasons.

He served as a team captain last fall and won the Team MVP award this past two years. As a sophomore, he captured the offensive achievement award.

Playing for the CFC-Samba regional premier soccer team in grades 9-12, Manzo wore the captain’s armband the last three years.

He also played for the Foundation soccer club was a member of Shelton Youth Soccer Organization from ages 5-14.

Academically, Manzo has been a member of the National Honor Society his junior and senior years. He is also a member of the Italian National Honor Society, a CAPT Scholar, a high honor recipient in grades 9-12, an SCC All-Academic team selection in grades 10 and 11, and a participant in the Connecticut American Legion Boys State as a junior. He was also the Italian Club president as a senior.

Manzo served as a Boys and Girls Club of LNV indoor soccer coach, a Unified Basketball and Unified Track and an SYSO assistant and head coach.
