Senior center events: Parties, ceramics, book club and more

The Shelton Senior Center offers classes, workshops and support to area seniors. The center is located at 81 Wheeler Street. Information: 203-924-9324. Some classes are for members only; others are for members and non-members alike. Wi-Fi is now available to members from 9 to 4:30 p.m.

 

Membership meeting — Held Friday, April 11, at 10:30 a.m. All members are welcome. Refreshments will be available. Election of officers for the membership will take place at the May Business Meeting (Friday, May 9). The nominating committee will submit a slate of officers and members to be elected to the executive board at the April 11 meeting.

 

Book club — Meets Friday, April 11, at 1 p.m., to discuss: Emma by Jane Austin. Members only.

 

Protect your assets — from lawsuits, nursing homes and other predators, presentation by Attorney Drazen, Tuesday, April 15, 10:30 a.m. Non-members welcome.

 

Hearing maintenance — Precision Hearing Specialists provide members with free hearing maintenance at the center the fourth Tuesday of each month from 10:30 to noon. This month is April 22. Appointments are necessary; call 203-381-9555 to schedule. Members only.

 

Foot care — Wednesday, April 23, 10 a.m., and meet Dr. David G. Sharnoff, who will give a presentation on “Diabetes and Your Feet.” Non-members welcome.

 

’50’s concert — The Shelton Songsters perform on Wednesday, April 23, at 1 p.m. for a musical journey remembering the songs of the 1950’s. Open seating. A special ’50’s lunch (hamburger, French fries and a Coke for $2), 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

 

April birthday party —Friday, April 25, 1 p.m. Cost: $4. Music by Vinnie Carr. Tickets on sale through April 23 at noon.

 

Blood pressure screening — The Emergency Care Institute of Bridgeport Hospital will conduct blood pressure screenings at the senior center on Monday, April 28, from noon to 2 p.m. Non-members.

 

Mother’s Day — Party held Friday, May 9, at noon. The luncheon includes: Tortellini with vodka sauce, chicken parmesan, red roasted potatoes, grilled zucchini, antipasto salad, roll, rice pudding and tea or coffee. Music by Vinnie Carr. “Mother of the Year 2014” will be announced. Cost: $15. Tickets may be purchased April 4 until the Wednesday at noon before the Friday party.

 

May birthday party — Held Friday, May 23, at 1 p.m. Cost: $4. Music by Vinnie Carr. Tickets on sale at the reception desk on Friday, April 25, until the Wednesday at noon before the party.

 

Band Jam — Tuesdays at 1 p.m. The members of Band Jam extend a welcome to come and hear them play and enjoy the open dance floor.

 

Pool players — Welcome to join in Mondays at 1 p.m. Teaching clinics and organized games are part of the program. Members only.

 

Ceramic classes — Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. Stop in to view a class, and talk to the instructor.

 

Volunteers needed — The center is looking for volunteers to help in the Snack Bar (Wednesdays 9-11 a.m.) and the kitchen (Tuesdays and Fridays, 11:15-1 p.m.).

 

Games — Wii Bowling, Thursdays at 2 p.m.; Bingo, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1 p.m.

 

Pool lessons — Available for members; call 203-924-9324 for an appointment.
