With both the UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams competing in their respective Final Four tournaments, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has proclaimed Friday to Sunday, April 4-6, as “Husky Weekend” in the state of Connecticut.
“UConn again is the only school in the nation to have both our men’s and women’s basketball teams reach the NCAA Final Four, and for that we are incredibly proud,” Malloy said.
“This weekend, I urge Connecticut residents to put on your blue and white and show the nation how excited we are for our hometown teams,” he said.
Action begins Saturday night
The UConn men will play the University of Florida Gators on Saturday evening (tip-off at 6:09 p.m.), and the UConn women will play the Stanford University Cardinal on Sunday evening (tip-off at 8:30 p.m.).
If the men win on Saturday, they would play in the championship game Monday night. If the women win on Sunday, they would compete in the championship game Tuesday night.
Malloy said he will extend “Husky Weekend” through Tuesday if either team — and hopefully both — make it to the championship.
Raising UConn’s profile
University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst expressed pride in both teams.
“The success of our student athletes is a credit not only to their hard work, but also to the dedication of their coaches and the state’s unwavering support of its flagship university,” Herbst said.
“These teams’ efforts help raise UConn’s profile, and that draws more people to learn about our academic excellence,” she said.
