The goal was to try to complete much of the project late last year, but the harsh winter brought construction to a halt. With the arrival of warmer weather, crews are once again working on the new walkway.

The brick walkway will start on Canal Street between the Avalon and Birmingham structures, then turn north to go in back of Avalon. Known as Phase Two, the new section will not be connected to the existing Riverwalk in Veterans Memorial Park (an area once known as “The Slab”).

Construction crews have formed a linear path in the ground that will be used for the brick walkway, similar to the existing Riverwalk. They have installed light-pole bases and done some grading, drainage and related site work. They should begin installing the brick pavers soon.

Phase Two will be about 900 linear feet long and about 10 feet wide in most places. The existing section in Veterans Memorial Park is about 1,800 feet in length (this doesn’t include the sidewalk that runs along Canal Street) and up to 12 feet wide.

In the future, this new Riverwalk section should be extended farther north on Canal Street toward the dam.

The existing Riverwalk has become a popular place for people to stroll in the downtown area, offering views of the Housatonic River and Derby’s central business district.
