Baseball: Errors hamper Gaels in loss to Xavier

The Shelton High baseball team committed seven errors en route to a 6-2 season-opening setback to visiting Xavier High of Middletown.

Coach Scott Gura’s Gaels took a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned first runs in the bottom of the first. Falcons’ starter Sean Carroll committed a double error on C.J. Rizzo’s two-out tapper in front of the plate, allowing Patrick Murphy, who opened the inning with a single, and Justin Lynch to score.

Xavier bounced with unearned runs in the top of second and third, two more on Nick Roy’s two-run double in fourth and another pair in the fifth — when Shelton committed three more errors.

Lynch took the loss on the mound, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out four. Carroll scattered two hits in four innings of work to notch the win for Xavier.

Shelton will take on North Haven High tomorrow at 4:15.
