State grant to help map Shelton’s tree canopy

Shelton is one of six towns in the area that will benefit from state grant being used for a regional urban tree canopy and assessment.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) will provide a $12,000 grant for the project, being coordinated by the Greater Bridgeport Regional Council.

The towns of Shelton, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull are joining together to develop a GIS-based urban tree canopy cover map, with the findings then to be analyzed and utilized.

The local grant was one of 15 DEEP urban forestry grants recently announced to encourage tree planting and tree management best practices in communities across the state.
