The Shelton High School girls tennis team started off its season right, posting a record of 3-1.

In the Gaelettes’ first match against Sheehan High School of Wallingford, Rigel Mahmood, senior captain, playing number one singles, dominated with scores of 6-3, 6-7 and 7-5.

Junior Ashley Varrone, playing number two singles, sophomore Maryana Hnyp, number three singles, and senior captain, Laura Ferris, number four singles, all defeated their opponents — assisting the team in its overall win.

Senior captain Alex Gumbs and senior Emily Rogalin played their first official number one doubles match of the season and won 6-2 and 7-5.

Juniors Vicki Dortenzio and Kristen Ferris followed their lead, playing number two doubles, and took a big win against their rivals.

Although senior Sam Rubio and sophomore Alexis Zhitmoni lost their number three doubles match, they both went on to defeat their opponents in their next match against Mercy High School of Middletown.

The girls played very hard and continued on to win their matches against Mercy High School, 5-2, and Lyman Hall, 7-0, but took a 4-3 loss against Career Magnet of New Haven.
