VIEW VIDEO: Help a Valley nonprofit in more ways than one through the Great Give

Valley nonprofit organizations — the agencies that shore up the cracks in community services — are appealing to potential donors for support during the third annual Great Give fund-raising campaign on May 6 and 7.

Great Give 2014 is a 36-hour online giving campaign, presented by the Valley Community Foundation (VCF) and the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. Nonprofits can increase the funds they receive during the drive through matching grants and prizes the VCF has coordinated.

Donations must be made online

The Great Give will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday May 6, and end at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7. All donations must be made online at www.givegreater.org with MasterCard, Visa or American Express credit cards to count toward matching grants.

Minimum donation is $25; a third-party processing fee totaling 5.75% of the amount will be deducted. For more information about the Great Give 2014, visit [email protected] or call 203-777-2386.

“Last year, Valley residents gave more than $60,000 to nonprofits in Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton,” said Sharon Closius, VCF president and CEO. “That was triple the amount donated in 2012 — an amazing outcome that allowed nonprofits to continue providing much-needed services.”

Making a crucial difference

With the Valley still struggling economically, Closius said, the services nonprofits offer make a crucial difference to residents who are trying to keep their homes, feed their families, find jobs, and recover from abuse or addiction.

“Other nonprofits enhance Valley education, health and culture, which are essential elements of any thriving community,” she said.

Give Local America tie-in

This year’s giving campaign coincides with the centennial anniversary of community foundations called Give Local America, involving more than 100 communities across the country that are urging their residents to support local nonprofits.

The Great Give’s tie-in with Give Local America opens up the possibility of additional funds from a national sponsorship pool.
