Workers also are starting to clean some trees and shrubs and install a fence near the river’s edge to improve the views of the Housatonic River.

The new Riverwalk section will begin on Canal Street between the Birmingham condominium building and the Shelton Avalon apartment complex, and take walkers along the river behind the Avalon complex.

It will be 900 linear feet in length and not connect to the existing Riverwalk section in Veterans Memorial Park (also known by its former name, the Slab).

Eventually, the new Riverwalk section is expected to continue north all the way to the end of Canal Street, where the entrance to a dam is located.
