Janice A. Sheehy, a senior vice president at Webster Bank, has been elected as the 27th board chairman of the Valley United Way. She succeeds Fred Ortoli, who completed two terms as the board chairman.
Sheehy previously was the local United Way’s board vice chairman in 1998, and community fund-raising campaign chairman in 1994.
She is team leader of business banking at Webster Bank.
In addition to her banking career and United Way work, she has served on the boards of the Birmingham Foundation, Hewitt Foundation and Shelton Economic Development Corp. She is a corporator of Griffin Hospital and was on the steering committee that raised funds for the hospital’s Breast Cancer Center.

Sheehy also has been Valley YMCA board chairman, a Junior Achievement volunteer, and a member of the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven’s Women and Girls Fund.
Her community involvement was recognized with the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Gold Seal Award, and the Valley United Way’s Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award. She is a University of New Haven graduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

In addition to Sheehy, also elected Valley United Way officers were Jennifer Bull of Dworken Hillman LaMorte & Sterczala as vice chairman, Jimmy Tickey of JWN Online as secretary, and Greg DeStefano of Marcum LLP and Partner as treasurer.
New board members are Ruth Parkins of Iroquois Pipeline Operating Co. and Deb McGuigan of Prudential Annuities. Carol Merlone of the Ansonia public schools was elected to a second board term.

Valley United Way is a philanthropic resource for the Valley towns of Shelton, Ansonia, Derby, Oxford and Seymour. The nonprofit agency works to match the needs of the community and the interests of donors to improve the quality of life in the community.
