Madeline Ross and Olivia Kelly graduate the top of their class

Two students from Shelton were at the top of the class at Sacred Heart Academy: Madeline Ross was the class valedictorian, and Olivia Kelly was the class salutatorian. They, along with the rest of their class graduated from the school in Hamden on May 24.

The two were also named Summa Scholars by the school in recognition of their academic performance.

Shelton-Madeline-RossMadeline will be heading to Boston University as a Trustee Scholar (a full four-year scholarship). The daughter of Mark and Carol Ross, she is a recipient of the Big Y Scholarship, and Naugatuck Valley Medical Scholarship, and the Moody’s Mega Math Scholarship.

During junior year, Madeline was recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar. At Honors Convocation, she received the Yale University Book Award, Princeton University Book Award, and the University of Rochester Bausch and Lomb Book Award. In sophomore year, she was inducted into the National Honor Society, as well as the Science,  French and Math National Honor Societies.

Outside of class, Madeline was a member of the varsity cross country and lacrosse teams. She was also a member of the school’s knitting club and a reporter for the school newspaper. She was a part of the paint crew for two Sacred Heart Academy’s musicals and served as president of her class during sophomore, junior, and senior years.

In the summer of 2013, Madeline interned at the UConn’s Department of Surgery Molecular Cardiology and Angiogenesis Laboratory. She also attended the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar.

Outside of school, Madeline takes dance instruction in ballet, pointe, tap and jazz, and lectors at St. Lawrence parish in Shelton. She has volunteered at the winter Special Olympics as a ski escort.

 

Olivia Kelly

Olivia, daughter of Shawn and Tina Iannarone Kelly,  is headed to Brown University in the fall as a pre-medical student with a concentration in classical studies. Olivia has been awarded a Connecticut Elks Association State Scholarship and a Big Y Scholarship.

Shelton-Olivia-KellyOlivia has earned her the National Merit Commended Scholar Award, an internship in the Department of Therapeutic Radiology at Yale University School of Medicine, the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, the University of Rochester Xerox Innovator Book Award, a Moody’s Mega Math Challenge Semifinalist Award, the Archdiocese of Hartford Summa Scholar Award, the Sr. Antonine Signorelli Memorial Scholarship, and 4.0 Gold Tassel Scholar Award. Olivia was also a Bronze Medalist at the 2011 International Genius Olympiad Environmental Science Fair and has earned 13 awards at the Connecticut State Science and Engineering Fair for projects submitted over three consecutive years.

In school she earned membership in the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Mathematics National Honor Society (Secretary), Latin National Honor Society, and the French National Honor Society.

She has been appointed to several positions, including a Kairos peer ministry leader, co-editor of the school newspaper, co-president of Key Club, and costume crew leader and fundraising team leader for the musicals. She was a founding member of the school’s Haiti Project for Children, was elected dance club vice president, and has been a student volunteer peer tutor and member of the Classics and Sister to Sister Clubs.

Outside of school Olivia has studied ballet, pointe, jazz and tap for 15 years. She has been an assistant dance instructor for two years and also takes private guitar and art instruction. In addition, Olivia has volunteered her time at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Monroe, Bradley School in Derby, and at the Lord Chamberlain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Stratford.
