Shelton teens awarded in annual music competition

The Shelton Intermediate School Viking Band, Jazz Choir and Jazz Band received first place and second place awards — as well as individual performance awards at the May 30 Music in the Parks Festival.

SIS was one of six schools competinging from Connecticut and New York.

Each group performed two songs for renowned music educators, performers and college professors who adjudicated the selections, provided written and verbal feedback and gave each group a score.

The SIS Viking Band, under the direction of Mark Bilotta, came in first in the concert band category. The SIS Jazz Choir, under the direction of Carole Sylvester, came in first place in the show choir category. The SIS Jazz Band, also directed by Bilotta, came in second in the jazz ensemble category.

In addition, three SIS students were selected for individual awards. Bryant Recker, who plays guitar, received a medal for best overall jazz soloist; Alexandra Gray received a medal for best overall vocal soloist and CJ Dioguardi, who plays drums, received a medal for best overall accompanist.
