The Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously to ban medical marijuana dispensaries and marijuana grow facilities in Shelton at its June 10 meeting.
The ban follows a temporary moratorium passed by the commission last year.
The P&Z did this by changing language in its regulations to make such facilities prohibited uses, similar to junk yards, medical waste facilities, etc.
The ban was partly based on the opinion of the city’s corporation counsel (city attorney) that marijuana remains illegal under federal law.
A new state law makes medical marijuana legal, and the state has selected a limited number of companies to set up sites for dispensing or producing the drug.
