As of mid-afternoon, a group of containers has been placed in the parking lot, near the rear of the factory where the fire took place.

It appears a large generator or pump as well as a water-tank-type truck also has been brought to the site, to aid in the pumping operation. Crews from a private environmental company are at the location.

Firefighters used a considerable amount of water to put out the blaze, which apparently began in a large industrial dryer in the basement that is used in the manufacturing process.

“We dropped a lot of water on the fire from the outside,” said Nick Verdicchio, an assistant fire chief in Shelton and the department’s spokesman.

The fire was first reported at about 12:50 a.m., and multiple units from Shelton and surrounding communities responded. It took about two hours to knock down the blaze, which at one point reached the roof but was contained to the very rear of the sprawling factory complex.

Four Shelton firefighters were injured in the efforts — one with a broken shoulder was taken to the hospital, and three with heat exhaustion were treated at the scene.
