Interstate 84 will be closed in both directions for 56 hours this weekend, and the state Department of Transportation is warning motorists that major traffic delays are anticipated.
The road will be closed in both directions at Exit 30, Marion Avenue in Southington, beginning Friday night, June 27, and is scheduled to reopen Monday morning, June 30.
It will be closed at 9 p.m. Friday, and should reopen Monday at 5 a.m.
Suggested alternate routes include I-91, I-691, Route 9 and Route 72. Local detours are established for residents and businesses in the area surrounding the construction site and signs will be posted.
Southington is between Waterbury and Hartford on I-84. The exit is near the Lake Compounce amusement park.
New bridges to be connected
Two bridges that carry I-84 over Marion Avenue, one eastbound and one westbound, are being replaced with new structures that have been built alongside the existing bridges.
The replacement work will require the complete closure of I-84 in both directions over Marion Avenue and will be completed in one weekend.
The highway’s Southington rest area, located west of Exit 30 on I-84 East, also will close during the same period. No parking along I-84 or entrance areas of the rest area will be allowed.
