Our company moved last week. It seemed a simple task as the new location was only a mile away. We projected that eight able bodies and one 26-foot truck would accomplish the undertaking in two days.
That was the underestimation of the year.
The first day, our rental truck sat unused in the parking lot as there was still much more box packing to be done. The more we packed, the more overwhelmed we became. Where did all this stuff come from?
By day two the moving truck was finally moving. Load the truck, unload the truck; load the freight elevator, unload the freight elevator; back and forth all day long. The more stuff we loaded, the more stuff remained.
By the end of day three, we all felt like quitting. We were overwhelmed and exhausted, yet we pressed forward. By the end of day four, it still didn’t look like we had accomplished a thing.
Box, label, load, box, label, load. Life became a blur of disorganized cardboard boxes that didn’t fully close.
A determined start and then…
What does all this have to do with weight loss? To me it seems the perfect analogy. Every new weight loss program I joined began with a focused, determined start followed by a paralyzing sense of futility.
Three hard weeks worth of weight loss could easily be offset by a weekend of insanity. With more than 200 pounds to lose, I often felt overwhelmed and dismayed.
However with dieting, there is the ever-present option to quit that doesn’t exist with moving a business. Once we signed our new lease we were left with the ultimatum of paying multiple rents or getting out of the old space. There really was no choice other than to persevere.
I’d love to say that “looking back it wasn’t so bad” … but it was. It was a hard move. But I can say that “looking forward it was worth the hard work” … and it was. Totally.
Finishing a move is like reaching a weight loss goal. It’s packing up and loading one day, one pound, one choice at a time. Never looking back. Only looking forward. And only forward far enough to help you get through the day before you.
We all have a choice to make. And we will have to live with that choice for the rest of our lives. Remember, dieting is hard. But being overweight is just as hard. Choose your hard.
At the end of day six, we all breathed a collective sigh of satisfaction as we surveyed our new, air conditioned digs — complete with a fabulous walking trail and gorgeous view.
