Republican Ben McGorty of Shelton easily won today’s special election to fill the 122nd District state representative seat.

McGorty defeated Democrat Arlene Liscinsky of Shelton in the election to fill the remainder of the current two-year term, which goes through the end of this calendar year. Voter turnout was low, as expected for a special election during the summer.

McGorty said he ran for the office because he likes helping the community through his volunteer activities. “Now I have the chance to help the state as well, bringing my volunteerism to a new level,” McGorty said.

Filling Larry Miller’s seat

The seat is vacant because longtime state Rep. Larry Miller, a Stratford Republican, died in late May.

The district includes slightly less than half of Shelton as well as small parts of Stratford and Trumbull.

Miller had first been elected in 1990, and generally had won re-election by comfortable margins since then.

McGorty is a longtime Huntington volunteer firefighter and Shelton Board of Fire Commissioners member. He also is a part-time deputy fire marshal and housing code official in the city as well as a real estate agent.

Liscinsky is a member of the Shelton Board of Education. She had run unsuccessfully against Miller in 2002. She’s involved with Cooperative Educational Services, which is a regional education organization, and previously was active with the local and statewide PTA.

There also will be a contest for the 122nd District House seat in the fall, with the possibility of at least one independent candidate also entering the race.

McGorty is being challenged in a Republican primary on Aug. 12 for the GOP nomination to run for the seat this fall. His primary opponent is Michael C. Vickerelli of Stratford.
