Michael Vickerelli has congratulated Ben McGorty of Shelton on winning the Republican primary for state representative in the 122nd District, which includes part of Shelton.
McGorty, the party-endorsed candidate who also won a special election for the seat three weeks earlier, won by 62%-38% margin.
“We worked so hard,” Vickerelli said, assessing the race on Wednesday morning. “We did an admirable job, but Ben McGorty did a better job getting the vote out in Shelton.
“I appreciate that Ben and I kept this as a contest for rep and not attacks on each other,” said Vickerelli, who lives in Stratford.
Also, Vickerelli said, McGorty “had an extra three to four weeks campaigning, getting his name out for the [July 22] special election.”
“I wish him the best of luck,” said the defeated challenger. “I will support him to get him into the seat in November.”
The 122nd House District includes slightly less than half of Shelton as well as small parts of Stratford and Trumbull.
It had been represented by state Rep. Larry Miller for almost 24 years before Miller’s death in late May. Miller was a Stratford Republican.
