One dead in I-95 South accident in New Haven; Highway closed for five hours

The early morning accident that closed Interstate 95 South on Wednesday was fatal.

State Police received initial 9-1-1 calls about the accident at 5:14 a.m. Callers indicated a serious crash had just taken place in I-95 South near Exit 46 in the Long Wharf area, according to a State Police press release.

UPDATE: As of 11:30 a.m., I-95 South in New Haven has reopened, according to the state DOT.

State troopers, EMS, and New Haven Fire Service responded to the scene to find an accident involving two tractor-trailer trucks and one motor vehicle.

Shelton-StatePoliceLogoExtrication was required and one person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. A second person was extricated and transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital with serious injuries.

As of 8:30 a.m., I-95 South remains closed to allow for accident reconstruction. Troopers and accident investigators are examining the scene.

The highway is expected to reopen as soon as possible. Traffic detours are set up.

I-95 South closed in New Haven after serious accident

All lanes of Interstate 95 South are closed near Exit 46 in New Haven on Wednesday morning after an accident.

WTNH-TV has reported that a vehicle stuck the back of a tractor trailer that was stopping as construction was being cleared. The second vehicle became wedged under the truck.

There is no estimate as to when the southbound lanes of the highway will be reopened.
