Police warn of telephone scam

State Police are warning residents about a telephone scam in which a caller claims to represent Microsoft and requests money to repair a computer virus.

FI-Shelton-PolicePolice said Southbury police received a complaint about the scam in which a person representing WiseTuneUp contacted a person, claiming to be a Microsoft associate and told that person their computer was infected with a virus because automatic updates were being returned.

The caller asked for $250 to fix the virus and remotely accessed the victim’s computer. The caller refused to refund the money when the victim complained, police said

The Shelton Police Department posted the warning on its Facebook page, which received comments from Shelton residents that they have received a similar call.
