Shelton ranks high in public safety

Website ranks Shelton as one of CT's safest cities

Shelton has been ranked as the fifth safest community in Connecticut with a population over 10,000.

The rankings were compiled by Movoto.com, a real estate brokerage site, and based on FBI crime statistics.

SheltonPoliceDeptPatchMovoto said for potential homeowners, the public safety of a community is “one of the most important factors when deciding where to live.”

The top three ranked towns in the state were much wealthier Fairfield County towns — Darien was first, Greenwich was second and Westport was third. Neighboring Trumbull was ranked fourth.

“After Darien and Greenwich, Shelton residents had the lowest odds of being the victim of a crime, with just a 1 in 88 chance,” the Movoto website said of the Top Ten rankings.

“This was mostly due to [Shelton’s] impressively low 1,077 property crimes in 2012, including 82 vehicle thefts, 661 thefts, and 334 burglaries per 100,000 people,” the website continued.

After Shelton, the other towns in the Top Ten were Wallingford and Wethersfield (tied for sixth), Windsor Locks (eighth), North Haven (ninth), and Groton (10th).
The state has 37 cities and towns with a population of more than 10,000, according to Movoto. Shelton’s population is about 40,000.

Looked at seven types of crimes

The survey looked at seven types of crimes: murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, and vehicle theft. The crime rates were calculated by town per 100,000 people, in order to fairly compare both large and small places.

The types of crime then were put in four categories — murders, violent crimes, property crimes, and total crimes. To compile the results, murders, violent crimes and property crimes accounted for 30% each of the score, and total crimes for 10%.

In 2013, another website — NeighborhoodScout.com — said Shelton was one of the 100 safest communities in the United States with a population over 25,000. That website ranked Shelton as the 80th safest community in America and the fifth safest in Connecticut.
