More than 30 members of Congress called on Prime Minister Modi during his visit.

This also included U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York and  U.S. Sens. Bob Menendez and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

Modi’s Madison Square Garden appearance was organized by the Indian Community Foundation in cooperation with Indian community groups, including Stamford-based Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO).

While in the United States, Modi has addressed the United Nations General Assembly and will have a dinner meeting with President Barack Obama and attend a luncheon hosted by Vice President Joe Biden.

Attracting businesses from India

Himes’ meeting with Modi was facilitated by GOPIO-Connecticut. A few months back, Himes had met with Indian Consul General Dnyaneshwar Mulay at an event organized by GOPIO-Connecticut in Stamford.

Local GOPIO members have suggested Himes visit India next year and explore attracting Indian businesses to Connecticut.

Thomas Abraham, GOPIO founder, described India as “an emerging economy and more Indian companies are investing in the U.S. than vice versa, and we hope that we will take a delegation of business and political leaders to India next year.”

Himes is a Democrat in his third term. He represents Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District, which includes most of Fairfield County.
