The Shelton eighth-grade Orange football team beat Branford, 16-13, to move to 6-1 on the season.
The Vikings drove 54 yards and scored on a 1-yard run by Jake Falanga and Nick Andrade’s kick made it 8-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, Andrade’s onside kick was perfect and the Vikings covered the kick.
Seven plays later, Falanga ran it in from 1 yard out and Andrade’s kick made it 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The offensive line of Sean Rago, David Yougquist, Sam Chalk, Matt Dilieto, Jake Breton and Colin Mengold paved the way for the Vikings as the combo attack of Falanga, Berrito, and Colin Saint Pierre combined for 177 yards on 32 carries and two touchdowns.
The Viking defense was led by Mengold (six tackles), Brian Berrito (five tackles, one interception), Jake Roberts (five tackles), Breton (four tackles) and Conor Greene (four tackles).
The Vikings will play Newtown home on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. for the “pink game” breast cancer awareness day.
Prior to that, Shelton beat Southington, 24-16.
The Vikings marched 55 yards on the opening possession, capped off by Berrito’s 3-yard touchdown run and Andrade’s two-point kick to lead 8-0.
Southington answered on its first drive and marched 75 yards to tie the game at 8.
Roberts then recovered a fumbled snap and the Vikings went six plays to paydirt, Roberts’ 2-yard run and Andrade added a two-pointer kick to up the lead to 16-8 at the half.
Saint Pierre led all rushers for the Vikings with 35 yards on 11 carries.
Falanga and Berrito added another 15 tough yards and Nick Andrade had 23 yards on a third-and-9 late in the game to set up Roberts 2-yard touchdown run to seal the win.
