Obituary: Marie Iassogna Scinto, mother of Shelton resident

Political leader, wife, mother, sister, aunt and beloved friend to so many, Marie Iassogna Scinto passed away on October 14, 2014 in her home, surrounded by her loved ones.

A lifelong Bridgeport resident, Marie attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and graduated from Harding High School in 1948. She was a valued employee at H.L. Greens Department Store and was quite the fashion aficionado. She later married Donald R. Scinto in 1954 and recently celebrated 60 years together on October 9, 2014.

Marie was a tremendous leader in many circles. In the 1950s, she began a fund raising woman’s club called the Ladies of Goodness — “L.O.Gs,” spearheading a variety of fashion shows. Marie was also a very involved parent, becoming a Girl Scout leader and an active member of the St. Stephen’s PTA of Trumbull/Monroe, birthing the Festival of Tables fundraisers.

First female GOP chairperson

Marie was also a substitute teacher for St. Thomas School in Fairfield and St. Andrew’s School in Bridgeport and had an illustrious career in politics, becoming the first female town chairperson for the Republican Party in Bridgeport. Lennie Grimaldi, author and radio personality, wrote about her in his book, Only in Bridgeport — An Illustrated History of the Park City. Inside the cover he inscribed, “Dear Marie, You’re not only a history-making politician, but a breath of fresh air in the long-winded political world.”

She was also a familiar face to Stratford residents, working at People’s Savings Bank for a number of years and then went on to become the Bridgeport Registrar of Voters in the 1970s.

‘Loving and giving spirit’

Marie was loved and admired by many people throughout her life. She had a loving and giving spirit, generous with her affection towards her family and others. She adored a good shopping spree, received great pleasure creating meals and desserts, and entertaining her family and friends. She lavished love on the family’s Maltese, Julius, found in many of the family photos with her.

She will be painfully missed by her husband, Donald, daughter Donelle and husband Michael Toner of Shelton. She leaves behind her beloved brother, Peter Iassogna of Oxford, nieces Debra Iassogna of Oxford and companion Ben Neal, and Susan Scinto-McEwan of Trumbull and husband Robert, nephews John Scinto of Trumbull and Bobby Scinto and wife Erin of Shelton, along with grand-nephew Jimmy McEwan and grand-niece, Katie McEwan of Trumbull, God-daughter Lizabeth Sullivan Powers of New Hampshire, God-son Gregory Hugh Marshall of Bridgeport, and many dear and close friends.

She leaves behind a legacy of impressive accomplishments, leadership and love.

The family wishes to acknowledge Philomena Gidi from the Danbury Nurses Registry, for her outstanding 24 hr/day dedication, affection and utmost professional care, to Vitas Hospice for their tremendous support and assistance, and Dr. Leon Rapko of Shelton, for his exceptional medical attention and daily phone communication.
