The Shelton eighth-grade Orange team finished the regular season 7-1 overall after a 32-12 win over Newtown.
The Vikings’ kicking game was the difference. Nick Andrade had three kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. Andrade also had two punts, both 48 yard, to give Newtown field position problems all day. Andrade was also 4-for-4 on his two-point PATs.
The Viking defense was hard-hitting, led by Colin Mengold (8 tackles), Connor Greene (5 tackles), Martin Dominguez (4 tackles), Jake Breton (3 tackles 2 sacks) and Jake Roberts (4 tackles, sack, blocked kick).
Colin Saint Pierre also returned an interception 42 yards to set up a Viking touchdown.
The Vikings jumped out to an 8-0 lead with an 11-yard run by Brian Berritto.
Newtown went 3-and-out and on the next drive, Roberts rambled 44 yards to paydirt to give the Vikings a 16-0 lead.
Newtown answered with two quick score to make it 16-12 with three minutes to go in the first half. The Viking offense then went 78 yards in seven plays to score, with a 17-yard touchdown reception by Saint Pierre giving Shelton the 24-12 halftime lead.
The Vikings added another touchdown on their first drive of the second half, with Roberts hitting Breton for an 8-yard touchdown completion.
