Boys soccer: Darien ousts Shelton in PKs

The No. 11 seed Darien High boys soccer defeated No. 6 Shelton High 0-0, 4-1 in PKs, in the second round of the Class LL state tournament on Wednesday night at Finn Stadium.

The Gaels, who were looking to advance to the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2009, finished their season at 12-2-6. The Blue Wave will face either Staples High of Westport or West Haven High on Friday in the quarters.

Shelton High keeper Claudio LoBello stopped Kai Bjornstad of Darien’s penalty kick in the first half, the best chance of the opening 80 minutes. Neither team broke through in the 10-minute, silver-goal sessions, but the Wave connected on all four of its PK chances, including Bjornstad, while Brian Chilet made the converted the Gaels’ lone chance.
