Shelton defeats Xavier, remains perfect at 9-0

Mark Piccirillo threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score when the Shelton High football team improved to 9-0 on the season with a 28-20 victory over  Xavier High from Middletown at Ed Finn Stadium on Friday night.
Coach Jeff Roy’s Gaels will host West Haven High Friday at 7 p.m. The Westies (5-4) blanked Daniel Hand of Madison, 21-0, on Friday.
Shelton took a 21-0 lead late into the second quarter when Xavier (6-3) crossed midfield for the first time on a 52-yard pass from Mike Scherer to Anthony Caramanica. That set up Glenn Cunningham’s 14-yard touchdown run with 1:51 left in the second quarter.
Xavier took the second half kickoff and drove 63 yards in 11 plays to make it 21-14 on Scherer’s one-yard plunge.
Shelton answered with a 12-play drive of its own that covered 55 yards.
On third-and goal from the 12, Peter Huff picked up a blitzing John Sullivan to give Piccirillo time to find Kevin Robinson in the middle of the end zone for the score.
Joe Zoppi’s fourth PAT restored Shelton’s two-score lead with 1:45 on the clock in the third period.
Xavier closed within 28-20 on Scherer’s 68-yard touchdown pass to Ed Luster with 4:24 remaining in the game.
Xavier used its time outs, but on third-and-7 Piccirillo found Sam Kirk open for a 20-yard gain and the Gaels ran out the clock from there.
Shelton drove 65 yards in seven plays to open the game and took the lead on Piccirillo’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Robinson.
The Gaels went up 14-0 when Piccirillo found Alexander Kirk in the left corner of the end zone with a 17-yard pass to complete an 82-yard drive that carried into the second period.
Two lays later, Ron Hubbard recovered a fumble forced by Alexander Kirk on the Xavier 44 at the 8:59 mark of the second quarter.
Piccirillo followed Peter Hoff through the left side and raced 29 yards for the score midway through the period.
