That gentle New England autumn is over. You could be waking up to the first snowfall of the season Friday morning in Shelton.

Rain that begins on Thursday night, Nov. 13, is expected to turn to snow overnight in Shelton as temperatures drop back down below freezing. The light snow could last until 9 a.m. on Friday.

But don’t expect the first snow day of the year for students: Only about a half inch of snow is predicted in the area, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Temperatures were below freezing in southwestern Connecticut on Thursday morning. It is expected to get cloudier and a bit windier as the day continues. Thursday’s forecasted high is 47 in the area but the wind chill could make it feel between 30 and 40 degrees.

Precipitation begins after dark

Rain and snow are expected after dark, turning to all snow after 1 a.m. The chance of precipitation is 80%, according to the National Weather Service.

After the snow stops on Friday morning, the high temperature is expected to be 42 but the wind will make it feel like it’s from 25 to 35 degrees.

There is another slight chance of rain and snow on Sunday night.

Colder temps here to stay

Temperatures over the weekend are expected to be in the low- to mid-40s during the days and hovering below and above freezing at night.

Next week, highs are predicted to be in the upper-30s through midweek, with lows in the mid-20s.

The first snowfall of last autumn came around the same time in 2013. A light snow fell on Tuesday morning, Nov. 12, as temperatures hovered right around 32 in Shelton. That snow didn’t stick to roadways but did to lawns.
