Marine veteran Doug Turner, who grew up in Shelton, has found a new career helping other veterans get jobs.

After retiring from the military as a first sergeant in May, Turner has joined the staff of RecruitMilitary’s military relations and candidate services department.

The 1987 Shelton High graduate’s role is to connect veterans with employment and career opportunities.

“We have what companies are looking for in their employees — leadership, experience, grace under pressure, integrity, pride, self-confidence and humility,” Turner said. “We are mission-oriented, mature, and able to work as a team.”

Making a difference

He joined the military after going to college to become a teacher. Then his father died at age 51.

“I was forced to grow up and change my life,” he said. “I wanted to make a difference and help my mother with her finances.”

Turner’s career took him all over the world, including Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He also served overseas in Germany and South Korea.

In the military, Turner worked in corrections, recruiting, and as an equal opportunity representative, family readiness officer, and family advocacy representative.

A lost colleague’s legacy

He believes in giving people opportunities, recalling how First Sgt. Luke Mercardante had given him a chance by appointing him to a leadership position.

“I told him that I wasn’t ready for such a big job, but he assured me that I was,” Turner said. “He gave me a chance, and he was a great leader and mentor. He passed away in Afghanistan after one day in-country, and I have been trying to fulfill his legacy since that time. Always give someone an opportunity.”

Turner is married with three children, two of whom are in college.
