The current warmth notwithstanding, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the region — including northern Fairfield County — from Wednesday morning through Thanksgiving Day (Thursday) morning.

“Significant snow accumulations are possible for interior portions of the lower Hudson Valley, southern Connecticut and northeast New Jersey,” the NWS said.

“Heavy snow” with accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are predicted in parts of interior southern Connecticut, depending on temperatures. As of late Monday, the specific forecast for Shelton is 2 to 4 inches.

A mix of rain and snow Wednesday morning will change to all snow by late Wednesday, the NWS said. The snow will continue into early Thursday morning before tapering off to snow showers.

“The snowfall will significantly impact holiday travel, making driving dangerous at times,” according to the NWS.

Watching the snow/rain line

This will be a classic nor’easter coming up the Atlantic coast, with the location of the rain/snow line determining how much snow accumulates in Shelton. Temperatures will mostly be in the low 30s.

If that rain/snow line stays south of Shelton most of the time, then significant snow totals for this area are likely. But if the rain/snow line is mostly north of Shelton, the city is likely to see more rain and less snow.

Wednesday and Thursday and significant travel days due to the Thanksgiving holiday, with many people moving about by both automobile and plane.
