The route of the annual Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5k Road Race has been altered due to the coming snowstorm.
Runners will not be allowed to use any state highways due to the expected snow, presumably because of public safety concerns.
The race still begin on Canal Street in Shelton at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27, with participants traveling through parts of Shelton and Derby during the event.
The alternative race route will utilize Canal Street from Wharf Street (near Inline Plastics) to Bridge Street, where the Derby-Shelton Bridge is located. Runners then will be directed to a running lane on Bridge Street, using the sidewalk on the Derby-Shelton Bridge Street to cross into Derby.
Derby Greenway to be used
Runners then will be directed to the Derby Greenway/Riverwalk, where they will continue the race, then return back to the finish line using the same route.
At no time will runners be allowed to traverse any state highway due to the expected snow, local police officials emphasized.
(In Shelton, the original route was to include a short stretch on Howe Avenue/Route 110; and in Derby, Route 34 was to be used.)
No parking on Canal Street
The race will begin at 8 a.m. and should conclude at about 9:15 a.m. It will begin on Canal Street in Shelton, near the Riverwalk, as is traditional (though closer to Wharf Street this year).
Canal Street (from Wharf Street to Bridge Street) will be closed for parking from 6:30-10 a.m. on Thursday, because the runners will be using that section of the road at both the start and end of the race course.
Any questions should be directed to the Shelton Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 203-924-1544, ext. 4337.
