Expected snow totals are declining in Shelton as the storm arrived earlier than expected, meaning more of the precipitation occurred when temperatures were still well above freezing.
The storm system also is moving faster than anticipated.
As of 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the rain seems to be having a hard time changing over to snow in Shelton, but that will eventually happen. It’s 34 degrees in Shelton and the temperature is expected to continue to drop, but not by much. The overnight low will be 28 degrees.
A raw, wet day so far
It’s a raw, wet day, with a combination of rain, sleet and wet snow flakes falling, depending on the time and elevation within Shelton. Not exactly a great day to be running last-minute errands before Turkey Day, such as a trip to the supermarket.
Once it turns into snow, the snow will continue into the late evening, with 2 to 4 inches now expected to accumulate in Shelton, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
There also a slight chance of new snow showers on Thanksgiving Day, in the late afternoon, but little new accumulation is expected, the NWS said.
Football classic and Hull Road Race
The bad weather has caused the rescheduling of the 105th Shelton vs. Derby Thanksgiving Day football game, which was to be on Thursday morning. The high school game now will be played on Friday, Nov. 28 at 5:30 p.m. The location remains Finn Stadium at Shelton High.
The 13th annual Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5k Road Race will still take place on Thursday, Nov. 27. Start time is 8 a.m. on Canal Street (the Riverwalk) in downtown Shelton. The race route in Shelton and Derby has been altered slightly due to the snow.
