Football: Shelton decks Hall, will face Xavier in state final

The Shelton High football team earned its first trip to the state finals since 2007 with a 42-14 drubbing of Hall at a rain-swept Finn Stadium in the Class LL Small Division state semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

The second-ranked Gaels led 35-0 at the half and were never tested by the third-seeded Warriors (8-3) of West Hartford. Shelton will face SCC rivals Xavier (8-3) either next Friday or Saturday in the title game, as the Gaels (12-0) will be hunting for their fifth state title in school history. The Falcons upset top-seeded Newtown High, 13-7, in the other Class LL Small semifinal.

The star of the show on Saturday against Hall was junior wide receiver-defensive back Chris Kanios, who returned to action for the first time since sustaining a collarbone injury in Shelton’s win over Hand on Oct. 24.

Kanios caught three passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, while intercepting a pass on defense. Wide receiver Kevin Robinson hauled in a 77-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mark Piccirillo, who also threw a 42-yard scoring strike to Alex Kirk.

Piccirillo, who threw for 335 yards, added a 4-yard rushing touchdown for the Gaels.

Shelton defeated Xavier, 28-20, on Nov. 7.
