FOUR SOLDIERS: Shelton family following a path to the military

Four members of a Shelton family are finding their paths are taking a similar road. They have played on the freshman, junior varsity and varsity football and lacrosse teams (where they were also captains), and are all making plans to go into the U.S. military.

John Farrell, Joseph Ortoli, James Farrell and Michael Ortoli are graduates of Shelton High School and are all in college right now.

Military service runs in the family. They have an uncle who is a recently retired sergeant major who served 30 years in the Marine Corps, another uncle who served as a major in the U.S. Army, and grandfathers who also served in the Marine Corps and Air Force.

John and James are the sons of John and Jeanne (Ortoli) Farrell of Shelton. Joseph and Michael are the sons of Daniel and Susan Ortoli of Shelton.

 

The Farrells

John Farrell graduated from Shelton High School in 2011. He is a senior at Western New England University and expects to graduate in the spring. At Western New England, he is in the Army ROTC as a commander in the Minuteman Battilion.

John took part in the Ranger Challenge in 2013 in Fort Dix, N.J. The same year he Rucked with the ROTC program in the Boston Marathon. After graduating from Western New England, he will serve as an active duty ordnance officer for the U.S. Army.

James Farrell graduated from SHS in 2013. He is currently a sophomore at Fordham University. He’s a member of the Army ROTC and has been a Pershing Rifleman since 2013. He has taken part in the Ranger Challenge in 2013 and 2014.

 

The Ortolis

Joseph Ortoli graduated from SHS in 2012. Currently a junior at Norwich University, he is a member of the Army ROTC, has been on the Norwich football team from 2012 to 2014, and completed basic training in Fort Benning, Ga., in 2013.

Joseph has been a member of the Vermont National Guard, C Troop, from 2013 to the present.

Michael Ortoli graduated from SHS in 2014. He is a freshman at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.
