NICE HOLIDAY STORY: A lost purse in Shelton and the goodness in people

It began like any other trip to the grocery store, but the end result for a Shelton woman was a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas and the goodness in people.

A few days before Christmas, the 82-year-old woman drove to the White Hills Shopping Center to buy groceries at Adam’s Hometown Market. She’s usually very careful to return her shopping cart to the proper place, but after leaving the store this time the cart got away from her and then stopped in a harmless location.

She drove home and soon realized she didn’t have her purse with her. Worried, she hurried back to the store and began frantically looking to see if she’d left her purse in the cart or somewhere else.

‘I was hysterical’

“I was hysterical,” she said. “It had all my credit cards, my driver’s license, my Medicare card. This had never happened to me before. I was scared to death.”

Many Adam’s employees began searching the carts in the parking lot to assist her. “They were looking all over the place,” she said. “There were more of them outside the store than inside the store.”

A member of the Wells family then approached her with the missing purse. The owner of Huntington Rental Center had spotted it and secured it for the rightful owner, and Wells was visiting that store at the time. They found her ID and cell phone and had called her son, whom they knew, before they saw the woman back at the shopping center.

‘The best Christmas present ever’

It was a happy ending, a timely reminder that good people in this world far outnumber the bad people.

“At this time of the year, when things are being stolen, I am so grateful,” the woman said. “This was the best Christmas present ever. And I want to thank them.”

“The good people are around us everywhere but we don’t hear about them enough,” she added.
