Despite being one of the most popular celebrities of the 19th century, little has been written about Tom Thumb. Lehman’s book recounts the amazing true story of Tom Thumb, with help from new sources, according to publicity material.

The 25-inch-tall Charles Stratton was promoted by P.T. Barnum, entertaining such dignitaries as Queen Victoria, Abraham Lincoln and Charles Dickens.

Known as “General Tom Thumb,” Stratton played to sold-out shows around the world for almost 40 years, according to publicity material. He lived from 1838 to 1883.

The Tom Thumb biography by Lehman recently was published by Wesleyan University Press. Autographed copies will be available for purchase after the library talk.
