Bridgeport Hospital to offer screenings, support groups and classes

calendarBridgeport Hospital will offer the following classes, health lectures, screenings and support groups during the month of February.

Blood pressure screenings

The hospital will offer free blood pressure screenings at the following locations and times:

• Fairfield Senior Center, 100 Mona Terrace, Monday, Feb. 2, 9:30–11:30 a.m.

• Stratford Baldwin Center, 1000 West Broad Street, Monday, Feb. 9, 9:30–11:30 a.m.

• Shelton Senior Center, 81 Wheeler Street, Monday, Feb. 23, noon–2 p.m.

Breastfeeding support group

Group for new and expectant mothers meets Wednesdays, Feb. 4, and Feb. 18, 10–noon, at the hospital’s outpatient campus, 5520 Park Avenue, Trumbull.

The group is facilitated by a certified lactation consultant. Mothers can attend as many meetings as they wish and are welcome to bring their babies.

Expectant parents

Classes and tours for new and expectant parents, including: Birthplace Tours, Thursdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26, 6–7 p.m. and Infant CPR Anytime, Thursdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26, 7:15–8:15 p.m. Register.

Genetic counseling

Bridgeport Hospital and Yale Cancer Center provide monthly genetic counseling services by appointment, including Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the hospital’s outpatient campus, 5520 Park Avenue in Trumbull. Services are provided by a certified genetic counselor. Information, appointments: 203-764-8400.

Healthy travels

Bridgeport Hospital’s Healthy Traveler service provides pre-travel consultations, travel vaccines, medications and comprehensive travel information to help prepare for a healthy and safe international trip.

Services include travel vaccines and evaluation of travel-related hazards linked to food, drinking water, insects, animals, deep-vein thrombosis, sunburn, jet lag, swimming, scuba diving and more. Information, appointments: 203-384-3613.

First aid and safety classes

Bridgeport Hospital’s Emergency Care Institute will offer American Heart Association self-care classes at the hospital, 267 Grant Street. Registration is required: call 203-384-4497.

Look Good … Feel Better

The free American Cancer Society program that helps women with cancer improve their appearance and self-image through hands-on beauty techniques, will be offered on Monday, Feb. 9, noon-2 p.m., at Bridgeport Hospital, 267 Grant Street, in the Operations Conference Room, first floor. Register.

Ostomy support

The next meeting of Bridgeport Hospital’s ostomy support group is Sunday, Feb. 15, 2 p.m., at the Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut, 12 Cambridge Drive, Trumbull. The meeting is open to anyone who has had or will have an ostomy operation, such as colostomy, urostomy or ileostomy. Spouses are welcome. Information: Sharon Tilley, 203-384-3209.

Stroke support group

Bridgeport Hospital’s Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers will host a free support group meeting for recovering stroke patients and their caregivers Tuesday, Feb. 3, 6–7 p.m., at its Shelton location, 4 Corporate Drive. For information or to register, call 203-925-4201.

Traumatic brain injury group

Support group meets the third Tuesday of the month, Feb. 17, 6–7:30 p.m., at the Disability Resource Center, 80 Ferry Blvd., Stratford. Information: 203-380-1004.
