The show is part of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s (NHSO) “Go to the Zoo” family concert series.

“The Story of Babar, The Little Elephant” will be presented on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. at Shelton Intermediate School, 675 Constitution Blvd. North.

The concert will take listeners through Jean de Brunhoff’s popular children’s story of one little elephant’s epic rise from rags to riches, set to music by Francis Poulenc.

It will feature NHSO pianist William Braun and performers, puppets, costumes and props by Really Inventive Stuff, a troupe of classically-trained performers.

Pre- and post-concert activities

Starting at 1:30 before the concert, the NHSO will offer an Instrument Discovery Zone where children can tap, tickle and toot real orchestral instruments before the performance.

Shelton-NhsoLogoFollowing the concert, at about 3 p.m., families are invited to stay for an afternoon snack and to meet the performers.

Admission to the concert and the pre-and post-performance activities are all free of charge, and no pre-registration is needed.

Sunday, March 1 — “Carnival of the Animals”

The NHSO family concert series is supported by the state Department of Economic and Community Development and the New Haven Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism. The 2014-15 season media sponsor is the New Haven Register.
