Friday morning snow led to a messy commute in Shelton, entire region

From 1 inch to 1.5 inches of snow appears to have fallen in Shelton on Friday morning.
The snowfall came a bad time, causing some havoc on highways and local roads during the morning commute.

While there wasn’t a lot of snow, there were minor accidents as well as back-ups at intersections due to traction challenges. Drivers inched along in many spots on major highways, including Route 8, the Merritt Parkway and Interstate 95.

 

Elementary schools closed

Shelton elementary schools (grades K-4) remained closed today “due to the difficult street conditions,” according to the Shelton Board of Education website. No AM or PM pre-kindergarten classes were offered.

However, the city’s three schools serving grades 5-12 opened and are being dismissed at their regular dismissal times. These schools — Perry Hill, Shelton Intermediate and Shelton High — have earlier start times than the five elementary schools.

 

Will be cold tonight

Now, in the early afternoon, the sun is out and it’s warmed up to 30 degrees as of 2 p.m. It will turn colder tonight, with an overnight low near 10 degrees, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The wind chill will make it feel more like zero.

 

Wintry mix expected Monday

The NWS forecast for the coming days in Shelton:

Saturday:  Sunny, with a high near 21. Wind chill values between -5 and 5. Overnight low of 10 degrees.

Sunday:  Mostly cloudy, with a high around 31 degrees. Nighttime low of around 25 degrees, with a chance of snow.

Monday:  Possible wintry mix of snow, freezing rain and rain during the course of the day. Cloudy, with a high near 37 degrees. Overnight low of 18 degrees.
