The Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team used a five-goal second period to turn a back-and-forth battle into a blowout, crushing Stamford 11-5 at Milford Ice Pavilion on Saturday.
Samuel New scored a hat-trick, and Sebastien Zeman, Ryan Johnson and Samuel Zaritsky each scored twice for the Wreckers. Jesse Greenspun and Ryan Purgay also scored for the Staples-led team. Greenspun had three assists and Evan Mancini assisted on a pair of goals. Brian Gray, Matthew Bidgood, Thomas Hendricks, Gupta, New, Johnson and Zaritsky all added assists. Gupta and Mancini are Shelton team members.
The Wreckers improved to 6-3, and Stamford fell to 2-8. They led 5-3 midway through the second period before recording six unanswered goals to put the game out of reach.
Less than a minute after Stamford made it 5-3 during a five-on-three power play, the Wreckers turned the game in their favor. Stamford still had a one man advantage but the Wreckers not only killed it off, but scored a shorthanded goal for the first of those half-dozen goals straight net-finders. Following a clear, Johnson hustled to pressure a Stamford defender deep in the offensive zone, created a turnover, and slipped the puck in front for Greenspun to capitalize and make it 6-3.
