Girls basketball: Shelton comeback falls short against defending champs

Shelton High’s girls basketball team overcame a 14-point third quarter deficit and seized a late-game lead, but fell 33-31 to visiting Lauralton Hall on Thursday.The Crusaders stretched their winning streak to six games and, in doing so, extended Shelton’s losing streak to five. Lauralton improved to 7-5 overall and the Gaelettes slipped to 4-8 despite turning things around with a great second-half effort.Maggie Salandra hit the game-winning basket with 17 seconds remaining. Shelton had erased a 24-10 deficit and gone ahead, 29-28, on a pair of free throws by Casey O’Connor with 3:19 left in the fourth.

The Crusaders reclaimed the lead on Emily Spahn’s 3-point play, with 2:38 to go, before O’Connor’s outside jumper deadlocked things at 31 with 1:04 remaining. Sarah Skoronski had 14 points, O’Connor scored six, and Colleen Flood and Nicole Wells both had four.
