Skaters lose in overtime

Michael Cullen’s power-play goal 21 seconds into overtime gave the Trumbull High boy hockey team a come-from-behind, 3-2, victory over Staples/Weston/Shelton on Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
It marked the first one-goal win for the Eagles (5-9 overall and 2-5 in the FCIAC) this season after they had lost four games by the same margin.
The winning score, which came at 7:39, was set up after Trumbull defenseman Sam Watson brought the puck into the Wreckers’ end and fired a shot on goalie Zach Bloom (21 saves). Cullen drove the rebound home.
Trumbull gained the one-man advantage when Staples’ Robert Wehmhoff was whistled for elbowing  at 13:31 of the third period.
Nick Cirino’s third-period goal (at 5:19) had drawn the Eagles even at 2-2.
A pair of goals by the Wreckers’ Ryan Johnson (Weston) had given his team a 2-1 first-period lead.
Freshman Dustin Maher scored for Trumbull in the opening period.
Johnson beat Trumbull goalie Francis Fromageat (18 saves) just nine seconds into the game on his teams’ first shot.
Maher’s goal, also on an initial shot, came after only 56 seconds of play.
Johnson netted his second goal at the six-minute mark.
Neither team was able to score in the second period where Trumbull held a 10-6 margin in shots.
Overall, the Eagles out-shot the Wreckers, 24-20.
The loss brought the Wreckers’ overall record to 6-6. SWS is also 2-5 in the FCIAC.
“It feels great to win this one after all of those one-goal losses,” said Trumbull coach Greg Maxey. “I thought our best period tonight was the third. Before that, we hadn’t been aggressive enough going to the net.”
“We’re a young team (without a senior in its line-up) and we’re still a little too inconsistent,” said Wreckers’ coach Todd Sharrin. “You can’t play just 25 out of 46 minutes of good hockey against a team like them and expect to win.”
